Cholera Kills 10 In Kano

A cholera outbreak at Kafin Dalawa village in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State has led to the death of ten persons.
Mallam Surajo Muhammed, an official of Isma Medical Initiative, a non-governmental organisation under the aegis of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, said yesterday that a total of 699 patients had so far been treated by the medical team since the outbreak started four days ago in the village.
Surajo, who is a medical laboratory scientist, pointed out that 16 others were still on admission at a temporary camp in the village.
“Because the village lacks proper medical facility, we had to convert a primary school as a temporary facility.
“When we arrived the village four days ago, 10 persons had already died, but we thank God things have stabilised now with our intervention,” he said.
According to him, most of the patients with minor cases were treated and discharged immediately.
He, however, called on the state government to come to the aid of the people in the village to prevent the spread of the disease.
Confirming the outbreak, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, said the state government had dispatched a medical team to Kafin Dalawa to assess the outbreak of the disease.
“The team is to chlorinate all the wells in the village before they return.’’
He also attributed the outbreak of the disease to the filthy environment and unhealthy attitudes of the people.
Surajo advised the people to always wash their hands and keep their environment clean.
“People should always observe simple personal hygiene to prevent illness or possible outbreak of diseases,” he said.
